Volunteer Safeguarding Trainers work alongside the Diocesan Safeguarding Team to deliver Basic Awareness and Foundation Training in their local area.
Safeguarding training is mandatory for most people in our churches who have a role or choose to serve in some way. Although many find the training easy to access via the National Training Portal, there are also people within almost every parish who require assistance. Volunteer Safeguarding Trainers work with the people in their local parish, benefice or deanery to access Basic Awareness and Foundation training courses. Volunteers use a combination of online and printed resources depending on their own preferences and training delivery level.
The role can be taken on by anyone in the parish with the relevant safeguarding training, but is usually completed by Parish Safeguarding Officers, Clergy or members of the Pastoral Team. There can be more then one Volunteer Safeguarding Trainer in a parish. You will need access to a computer, be a good communicator and be able to offer a listening ear, while also reacting appropriately and following strict procedures and guidelines.

Level One or Level Two?
There are two levels of Volunteer Safeguarding Trainer in this diocese.
Level One trainers use the National Training Portal. They work with up to three people at any one time and assist them to work through the Basic Awareness and Foundation modules online.
Level Two trainers use a PowerPoint version of the same material that is available via the National Portal. The PowerPoint can be displayed via a computer and projected for a group to work through the slides, or the slides can be viewed as a printed display-book so participants can look through them at a table in pairs/threes. The trainer will have a script, ensuring all the key points of each slide are covered in detail. A Level Two trainer can work with up to 8 people at one time. If two Level Two trainers are working together, or if a diocesan trainer is working with them, a group of up to 32 people can receive training at the same time.
It is recommended that all applicants become a Level One Volunteer Trainer before applying to become a Level Two Volunteer Trainer.
